Hankook has introduced the Smart Control AW53 for the steer axle and Smart Control DW53 for the drive axle, a new generation of truck winter tires that will replace the AW02 and DW07. Both models premiered at IAA Transportation 2026 in Hanover.
Development focused on winter performance across the tire’s life, using zigzag grooves, 3D sipes, and tie bars for snow and ice grip plus block stability. Internal tests at UTAC Ivalo versus the predecessors cite 2.8% better snow braking, 4% better snow acceleration, and 3.7% better snow handling.
Hidden Groove technology reveals additional grooves and 3D sipes as the tire wears, aiming to sustain snow and wet grip; Hankook also claims up to 15% longer service life versus the prior generation. Launch sizes are AW53 385/65 R22.5 and DW53 315/80 R22.5, both 3PMSF marked and designed to be regroovable and retreadable.
