The Tire Industry Project (TIP), the CEO-led sustainability initiative made up of ten of the world's largest tire manufacturers, has released its annual key performance indicators (KPI) report, showing continued gains in carbon intensity, renewable electricity and water use across member companies.
Titled Sustainability Driven: Key Performance Indicators for TIP Members 2021-2025, the report tracks member progress from 2021 through 2025 against 16 environmental, social and governance (ESG) measures. Those indicators cover seven pathways in TIP's Sector SDG Roadmap, which outlines how the tire industry contributes to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.
Transparency and collaboration are at the heart of TIP’s efforts to foster sustainability innovation in the tire sector. This KPI report demonstrates how TIP members are translating their commitments into measurable results and driving meaningful advancement across the tire value chain. TIP has been monitoring progress against the SDGs for a decade, and it is encouraging to see how far members have come.

Emissions, energy and water
Decarbonization. Members cut carbon emissions intensity by 4.9% compared with 2024, bringing the total reduction since 2021 to 29.2%. Renewable sources now supply 60.5% of the electricity members procure, an increase of 6.5% over 2024.
Water efficiency. Water withdrawals fell 5.7% between 2024 and 2025, and withdrawals from water-stressed areas dropped 10.9% over the same period. Measured against 2021, total withdrawals are down 18.4% and withdrawals in water-stressed areas are down 35.2%.
Science-based targets. Ninety percent of TIP members now hold validated science-based targets, up from 80% in 2024.
Natural rubber and materials sourcing
Every TIP member continued to report its responsible natural rubber procurement efforts to the Global Platform for Sustainable Natural Rubber (GPSNR). In addition, 90% of members have independently put responsible sourcing policies in place covering all materials used in tire production.
Tire and road wear particle research
The report also details TIP's ongoing work on tire and road wear particles (TRWP). In 2025, the group funded five new TRWP research projects and supported the publication of eight scientific papers, twice as many as in 2024. TIP-supported work now totals 36 TRWP research publications and 796 citations, a 14% increase in citations from 2024.
TIP has also committed USD 2 million in grants through its first Open Call for Projects, a global program aimed at accelerating independent research in the field. In September 2025, TIP and partner MIT hosted the second Tire Emissions Research Conference; the third edition is set for Cambridge in December 2026.
Circularity
On end-of-life tires (ELT), the report points to the release of the ELT Toolkit 2.0, an Interactive ELT Data Map and further work on PCR development as resources to help the value chain move toward more circular tire systems.
TIP says its KPI reporting is intended to give policymakers, regulators, industry partners and other stakeholders a transparent view of sector-wide sustainability trends, priorities and areas where more collaboration is needed.
