Financial recovery after a car accident usually comes from a mix of insurance claims, medical coverage, and, in some cases, legal action. Your options depend on who caused the crash, how much insurance is available, and the cost of your injuries, vehicle damage, and lost income. The goal is simple: replace what you lost and cover what the accident cost you.

In St. Louis, that process often gets complicated. The city sees frequent crashes on major routes like I-70, I-44, and I-64, and not every driver carries enough insurance to cover serious harm. Missouri law sets minimum insurance limits, but those limits are often too low for real-world injuries.

When coverage runs out, people often turn to their own policies or guidance from a St. Louis uninsured and underinsured accident lawyer to understand what still applies. The sooner you understand your financial recovery options, the better positioned you are. Insurance deadlines, medical billing rules, and state laws all shape what compensation is available.

Knowing the basics early helps you avoid gaps, delays, and unpaid costs as you move forward after the crash.

Understanding Your Financial Recovery Options After a Car Accident

A crash can drain your savings fast. The average economic cost of a crash involving injury was $125,000 per person in 2019, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. That number climbs when injuries are severe. You need to know where money can come from—and what the law allows.

Insurance Coverage: Start Here

Missouri requires drivers to carry liability insurance. Under Missouri Revised Statutes §303.190, minimum coverage includes:

$25,000 for bodily injury per person
$50,000 per accident
$25,000 for property damage

That sounds decent. It often isn’t.

If the other driver has insurance, you can file a claim against their policy. Keep records of:

Medical bills
Repair estimates
Lost wages
Out-of-pocket expenses

Insurers look for gaps. Clean documentation protects you.

Uninsured and Underinsured Motorist Coverage (UM/UIM)

Missouri law also requires uninsured motorist coverage. Mo. Rev. Stat. §379.203 mandates at least $25,000 per person in UM coverage.

If the at-fault driver has no insurance, your UM policy steps in. If they carry too little, your underinsured motorist coverage may cover the difference, depending on your policy.

Example:

Your medical bills total $60,000.
The at-fault driver has $25,000 coverage.
Your UIM policy may cover the remaining $35,000, up to your policy limits.

Review your declarations page. Many drivers don’t know what they carry.

Medical Payments and Health Insurance

You may also have:

Medical Payments (MedPay) coverage through auto insurance
Private health insurance
Medicare or Medicaid

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports that motor vehicle crashes caused over 2.6 million emergency department visits in 2022. Even short hospital stays cost thousands. MedPay can help with immediate bills, regardless of fault.

Be aware: health insurers may seek reimbursement if you later receive a settlement.

Filing a Lawsuit for Additional Compensation

If insurance falls short, you can file a personal injury lawsuit.

Missouri’s statute of limitations for car accident injuries is five years under Mo. Rev. Stat. §516.120. Miss that deadline, and you likely lose the right to recover damages.

A lawsuit may allow you to seek:

Full medical costs
Future treatment
Lost earning capacity
Pain and suffering

Courts look at evidence. Photos, witness statements, and medical records matter.

Financial recovery takes effort. But when you understand your options, insurance claims, UM/UIM coverage, medical benefits, and legal action, you put yourself in a stronger position to rebuild.
