Mining applications require tires that can operate under high mechanical and thermal stress. BKT’s response is a tire lineup that is developed for maximum efficiency, safety, and a long service life, reducing TCO and downtime.

Open-pit mining is one of the most challenging activities for OTR equipment. Typical operating conditions are highly abrasive surfaces, variable slopes, sharp debris, extremely heavy loads, and continuous multi-shift operating cycles. In such an environment, the tire is not just a consumable item but a critical structural component that directly affects safety, productivity, and operating costs.

Balkrishna Industries Ltd. (BKT)—one of the world’s leading manufacturers of specialty tires — has developed a technical tire range tailored to the needs of mining operations, aimed at optimizing field performance and reducing the Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) for operators and fleet managers.

Tires designed for heavy-duty cycles and harsh environments

Among the products that are best suited for these applications is EARTHMAX SR 46, a radial tire designed for rigid dump trucks employed in mining operations. The tire’s All-Steel casing and belts ensure high resistance to punctures, stress and other damage. This tire features a special tread pattern with lug blocks and a circumferential groove for excellent cornering performance, ensuring minimal damage to the outer tread.

In addition, the BKT lineup includes EARTHMAX SR 459, an All-Steel radial tire designed with multi-ply steel belts and an extra-deep tread, providing structural protection and maximum abrasion resistance. This pattern is intended for rigid long-haul dump trucks, carrying heavy loads over unstable rocky surfaces, providing reliable traction even on slopes or landslide-prone terrain. These features result in an extended tire life-cycle, while reducing maintenance and improving overall operational reliability.

Application-specific design and adaptive engineering

“In extreme operating environments such as open-pit mines, it is vital to rely on tires providing consistent strength, traction, and stability throughout their entire life cycle. Every component affects overall efficiency—each downtime can significantly compromise productivity,” says Piero Torassa, Field Engineering Director, BKT.

This is why BKT's engineering approach always starts from analyzing the actual context, aiming at transforming operational needs into concrete technical solutions.

“At BKT, each tire is designed starting from real field usage conditions,” continues Piero Torassa. “We study the loads, speeds, temperatures, and types of terrain to offer tailor-made solutions that deliver reliable and long-lasting performance. Our mining range is the result of many years of research, rigorous testing, and a direct dialogue with operators.”

Value for operators and fleet managers

BKT's solutions fit into a framework of strategic support for the customer's operating cycle: Providing tires tailored to specific application means contributing to reduce downtime-related costs, as well as costs due to premature wear, excessive fuel consumption and unscheduled maintenance. This is why the company is also investing in field data collection systems and a consulting approach aimed at supporting fleet managers in choosing the ideal configuration based on the type of ground, environmental conditions, and internal logistics of mining operations.

Having a presence in more than 160 countries, vertical production capacity, and a full range of Off-Highway products, BKT is a reliable partner for companies operating in the harshest environments, where each technical variable—from compound to tread depth—might have a decisive impact on the efficiency of the entire operational chain.
