Here’s a close look at Kumho’s three new tires

Earlier this month Kumho Tire U.S.A. launched two new ultra-high-performance (UHP) tires and a new all-season tire for light trucks, SUVs and CUVs.

Let’s take a close look at each of them.

The PS91 is one of two new additions to Kumho’s established Ecsta line. The company promises the Ecsta PS91 has precise handling in wet and dry conditions, both on and off the track.

“An ultra-high-performance summer tire, the PS91 was designed to have optimal stability at high speeds, reduced road harmonics for a quiet ride and enhanced dry performance characteristics,” the company said.

The tire will debut in 34 sizes in 18- to 20-inch fitments and has a Y speed rating. An additional 9 sizes will be released in the second quarter of 2016.

Special features include:

  • A compounded rib tread design that increases stability and performance at high speeds
  • The C-Cut 3D design “enhances block stiffness, providing optimum braking performance and stability”
  • The 3D dimple design minimizes internal heat, maximizing block durability
  • A racing-flag pattern on the sidewall. It’s purely cosmetic but it’s sure to turn heads when you’re sitting at the lights

Kumho says the tire rates a nine out of ten for both wet and dry performance, an eight for noise, seven for comfort and 6.5 for wear.

The Ecsta PS31 is a value-oriented UHP summer tire from the same range. Kumho promises the tire offers a “perfect balance of high-speed stability, low road noise and safety.”

“Additional features include structural enhancements to prevent irregular wear for longer tread life, outstanding resistance against hydroplaning and increased cornering performance as well as excellent traction in wet conditions,” the company said.

The Ecsta PS31 comes in 45 sizes with V and W speed ratings and a rim range of 18 to 20 inches.

Special features include:

  • A solid center rib and stylish lateral grooves to reinforce block stiffness and improve wet braking
  • Wide lateral grooves to maximize water displacement when cornering and to prevent irregular wear due to the 0-10 degree angle range
  • Wide four-channel circumferential grooves improve hydroplaning resistance
  • 3D dimple design minimizes heat build-up on tread blocks, enhancing high-speed durability
  • Microgrooves with diagonal siping allow water to drain efficiently to avoid hydroplaning
  • And Kumho has kept the racing-inspired checkered-flag design on the value tire.

The tire scored 8.5 in both wet and dry, 7.5 for noise, and sevens for both wear and comfort.
