How good is it?: Cooper Discoverer A/T3 Review

Cooper’s Discoverer A/T3 is a mud- and snow-rated light truck tire with either an outline white letter or black sidewall. Consumer Reports ranked it eighth out of the 15 all-terrain light truck tires they recently reviewed. Traction News has compiled data from a number of sources to help you sell more of the Cooper Discoverer A/T3.

Fitment and sizing information

As an off-road all-terrain light truck tire, the Cooper Discoverer A/T3 can be found on just about anything going off-road. Examples of vehicles the Discoverer A/T3 can be installed on include the GMC Canyon, Ford’s F-150 Raptor, the Durango from Dodge, and the Chevy Silverado 4X4. The Discoverer A/T3 comes in 58 sizes from 15 to 20 inch and three load ranges.

What Cooper says about the Discoverer A/T3

Cooper says the Discoverer A/T3 uses a combination of compounding, design and technology that is balanced and that this balance delivers a tire that performs well in almost all terrain types. The tread compound is said to improve traction on wet roads and also reduce rolling resistance to improve fuel economy. Cooper also says “the aggressive tread design significantly improves off-road traction without sacrificing highway performance. All traction…all terrain…all the time!” Cooper rates the tire to deliver tread life of 55,000 miles.

OneClickTires: Cooper Discoverer A/T3 “really popular”

Traction News spoke to an industry insider who said the Cooper Discoverer A/T3 was by far the best-selling all-terrain tire in their inventory for about four years. He said that “in the upper Midwest, the Cooper Discoverer A/T3 is the most popular tire, most-requested, most-used all-terrain tire we have.” He said the 265/70R17 is the size that sells the most. The only time they had a problem with stock of this tire was when the company he works for didn’t order enough to fill customer orders.

Uniform government testing results

Government testing results for the Cooper Discoverer A/T3 are pretty good. Uniform Tire Quality Grading gave it a score of 560 for treadwear, meaning it stands a chance to deliver the 55,000 miles that Cooper clams it will. It also received UTQG grades of “B” for temperature resistance and an “A” for traction.

Discoverer A/T3 received above average marks in testing

Test results from Consumer Reports ranged from “fair” to “very good.” It received the highest grade twice, for dry braking and hydroplaning. The low grade of “fair” was also given twice, for rolling resistance and ice braking. In the CR tests for ride comfort and handling, it received grades of “very good.” Finally, in the categories of wet braking, snow traction, noise, and tread life, Consumer Reports gave the A/T3 a grade of “good.”
